Private Presciptions

As a qualified physiotherapist independent prescriber, I am able to provide private prescriptions for certain pain relief and musculoskeletal medications - offering a streamlined and efficient approach to your care.

This service allows me to assess your condition, diagnose appropriately, and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe medication to help manage pain, inflammation, or support your rehabilitation - all without the need to wait for a GP referral. This ensures faster access to treatment and a more integrated care plan.

Private prescribing may include options such as topical anti-inflammatories, oral analgesics, or muscle relaxants, and is always based on evidence-based practice and your individual needs.

If pain is holding you back from moving forward, this service ensures your treatment isn’t delayed by a wait to see your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of medications can you prescribe?
As a qualified Independent Physiotherapist prescriber, I can make recommendation on pain management and issue private prescriptions for certain medications commonly used in musculoskeletal care. These may include:

  • Topical anti-inflammatories
  • Oral pain relief (e.g., paracetamol, ibuprofen, or stronger options if appropriate)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Neuropathic pain medications (e.g., for nerve-related pain)

Do I still need to see my GP?
Not necessarily. If your condition falls within the scope of physiotherapy practice, I can assess, diagnose, and prescribe without the need for a GP appointment - helping you access care more efficiently. However, if your condition is outside my scope, I’ll guide you to the appropriate pathway.

How do private prescriptions work?
Once a prescription is issued, you can take it to a local pharmacy to be fulfilled. Medication costs are not included in your physiotherapy session and are payable directly to the pharmacy.

Please note: Private prescriptions are not covered by the NHS. This means you will be responsible for paying the full cost of the medication directly to the pharmacy. Prices may vary depending on the pharmacy and the specific medication prescribed, but private prescriptions can offer quicker access to appropriate treatments.

Is this service included in my physio appointment?
If a prescription medication is recommended by your physiotherapist this will be discussed fee for writing a prescription, though any medication costs are separate.

Is this service safe?
Absolutely. As a prescriber, I work under strict clinical guidelines, undertake regular training, and always take a full medical history to ensure any treatment is safe and appropriate.
